I am allergic to lemons. In recipes that ask for lemon extract, what would be a good, easy substitute?

Question by leapinghurdles: I am allergic to lemons. In recipes that ask for lemon extract, what would be a good, easy substitute?

Yes, I am sure I am allergic to lemons. I have what is called an anaphylactic reaction, a potential death sentence, so I would prefer not to ingest anything with lemons, lemon juice, lemon peel, or lemon extract. It’s not my day to die. :)

  1. Frank Lucas says:

lime… if not lime, then perhaps vanilla extract.

  2. Alec Kobayakawa says:

    lime, grapefruit, orange
    basically anything acidic

  3. Liz says:

You can replace the extract with any other extract. It will change the flavor of course. Just pick one you like.

  4. Waytootiny says:

You can get acetic acid( vitamin C powder) or citric acid( it’s what makes foods taste sour) or a blend of the two at most home brewing /wine making supply stores. The other place to get it would be a drug store just ask the pharmacist. A tiny amount goes a long way. Good Luck.

  5. James says:

if it asks for lemon then it needs to taste like lemon. do not use any thing else like lime or vanilla, go get imitation lemon juice, they make it with out any actual lemon.

  6. Noccie says:

The lemon extract is going to be such a small part of any recipe that I doubt you’d have an allergic reaction. Otherwise just use vanilla or simply leave out the lemon and proceed with the rest of the recipe.
Are you sure you are allergic to lemons? That would be very unusual.
